The Best Croissant I Ever Ate
No vacation in Paris is complete without indulging in a few buttery French croissants, and why not eat the best of the best while we’re here? 🙂
To find the best croissants in Paris, we looked to the annual Fete du Pain, aka the Festival of Bread – a week-long celebration of the city’s most accomplished bakers and their creations. One of the most anticipated events each year is the awards ceremony and recognition for Best Baguette and Best Butter Croissant in Paris, and last year’s croissant winner was Benjamin Turquier of the acclaimed 134 Rdt, who also happened to win second place in 2013.
134 Rdt is named after the bakery’s address 134 Rue de Turenne, and is located just a few minutes away from the République metro station. We actually had to try twice because the first day we went, one of the bakers informed us that it was “too early” for croissants even though we got there at 8am. The next day we went there around 1pm and there was a case full of them!
On the outside, these croissants were way bigger and puffier than the others we’d seen, with very well-defined, visible layers. They looked absolutely enticing in the case, so we purchased two and then quickly hurried outside to eat them.
Let me tell you, these croissants are LIFE-CHANGING. As soon as I took my first bite, I knew that I had found the best croissants in all of Paris.
So how exactly are these so good? For starters, these flaky croissants have a much more defined crispiness to their outside, and every bite ended in a delicate crunch. The inside of the croissant is perfectly airy and puffy, with a very distinct buttery taste.
Needless to say, we both devoured our croissants within seconds and had to restrain ourselves from going back for seconds!
