Review: Rooster & Rice

One of my go-to comfort foods is Khao Man Gai, which is the Thai version of Hainanese Chicken. And lately, it seems like this dish has been popping up everywhere, from food trucks to food stands to restaurants. At the most basic level, this dish is just chicken with rice, but the Thai version of this has a unique flair with delicious flavor.

The best place in San Francisco for Khao Man Gai has to be Rooster & Rice, a small shop tucked away in the Marina district that specializes in the dish. The menu here is simple and clean, and you honestly can’t go wrong with any of their choices! The Original is the most popular as well as the most classic (it even comes with a side of chicken broth!). I highly recommend trying it, along with an extra side of the sauce.

Rooster & Rice is a no-frills kind of shop and the inside only has three seats, but there’s a few other tables outside that people can use.

One order of the original can feed two people – it’s really packed with rice and chicken! The chicken was moist and flavorful, the rice perfectly cooked, and the sauce just tied everything together. I loved the ginger-infused sauce – it made every bite unforgettable. Simply put, I couldn’t have asked for a more perfect plate of food!

Overall, the Khao Man Gai at Rooster & Rice was absolutely delicious and was the best Khao Man Gai that I’ve been able to find anywhere in San Francisco. Definitely make sure to stop by if you’re ever in the area – you’ll be in for a treat!
